Ægir
Ægir (left) is the Æsir god of the sea. He lives with his wife Rán (right) in a hall near the island of Hléysey. They have nine daughters, usually identified as the waves of the sea. In several of the stories, Ægir plays the role of host, providing hospitality for the assembled gods and goddesses. Ægir uses an enormous cauldron to brew ale for these gatherings, taken from the giant Hymir by Þór |
While Ægir represents the friendlier aspects of the seas, Rán uses a net to gather drowned men from the bottom of the sea. Thus, she is regarded as the goddess of death for those who die at sea.
